Brandwatch publishes no price; Vendr tracked 40 deals and found a $50,000 median. We priced five listening alternatives per tracked topic. See the math.
Brandwatch’s Price Is a Contract, Not a Sticker
Brandwatch’s own pricing page lists no numbers. It names three suites — Consumer Intelligence (the former Brandwatch Analytics), Social Media Management (the former Falcon.io) and Influencer Marketing — states that standard to enterprise plans are available for each, and routes you to a demo request. For a two-person team trying to budget, that page is unusable (brandwatch.com/pricing, checked 25 September 2026).
The most defensible figure available is contract data rather than list price. Vendr, which tracks negotiated software deals, reports a median Brandwatch contract of $50,000 a year across 40 purchases, with recorded deals running from $19,542 to $81,200 and buyers saving 15% on average (vendr.com/marketplace/brandwatch, checked 25 September 2026). Two things follow from that. The floor is higher than most small teams assume — the cheapest recorded deal is still a five-figure commitment. And the spread is wide enough that two companies with similar requirements paid very different amounts, which means seats, query volume and negotiation move the number more than the plan name does.
This article is for the team underneath that floor: one to fifteen people, one brand or a handful of client brands, and a need to know when the brand is being discussed so someone can reply while the thread is still alive. Every price below was read on the vendor’s own pricing page on 25 September 2026, on the billing cycle noted, and linked so you can check it yourself; where a vendor publishes nothing, we say so instead of estimating.
The Metric That Predicts Your Bill: Cost Per Tracked Topic
Listening tools rarely meter what you think you are buying. The two axes that move the invoice are tracked topics — called keywords, alerts, queries or topics depending on the vendor — and monthly mention volume. Users, dashboards and refresh speed are bundled or capped in ways that only show up after you have paid.
Topics matter more than mentions for small teams, because you almost never run out of mentions; you run out of things you are allowed to watch. A shop tracking its own name, four product lines, three competitors and a founder who posts publicly needs nine slots before it has watched a single misspelling of the brand. Those nine keywords land on Brand24’s $399-a-month Pro tier. YouScan sells three topics for $499 a month. Same job, different meter, a different bill by a factor of five.
The second axis is refresh frequency, and it hides in the fine print. Brand24’s Individual tier updates every 12 hours; the Team tier updates every hour (brand24.com/pricing). Twelve hours is fine when the output is a Monday report. It is the wrong instrument if the point is to answer a complaint the day it appears.
Before you open anyone’s pricing page, answer four questions. The answers, not the feature lists, decide which tier you actually need:
- How many distinct things must be watched at once? Brand terms and misspellings, product lines, competitors, executive names.
- Does any of it need a same-day response, or is a weekly read enough? Only the first column needs real-time refresh.
- What happens when the mention cap is reached — an upgrade prompt, a blackout, or silent truncation of the data?
- Do you need exports, multiple logins and branded reports, or is one dashboard with one reader sufficient?
Five Brandwatch Alternatives, Priced on the Vendors’ Own Pages
None of these replaces Brandwatch feature for feature. These are the tools that do the monitoring job for a small team at published prices, listed from the cheapest cost per tracked topic upward.
- Awario — $29 a month billed annually on Starter ($49 month to month), Pro at $89 a month annually ($149 monthly) and Enterprise at $249 a month annually ($399 monthly). The vendor’s own FAQ describes the Starter limits directly: the free trial runs on Starter, which allows 3 alerts and up to 30,000 mentions (awario.com/pricing). That works out at $9.67 per tracked topic per month, which is why it is first on this list. Two limits to accept: CSV export is restricted to Pro and Enterprise, and relevance filtering is basic, so you will read more noise than you would on a $499 platform.
- Brand24 — Individual at $199 a month billed annually (3 keywords, 2,000 mentions a month, one user, refresh every 12 hours), Team at $299 (7 keywords, 10,000 mentions, unlimited users, hourly refresh), Pro at $399 (12 keywords), Business at $599 (25 keywords) and Enterprise from $1,499. The API is billed as an extra fee of $99 (brand24.com/pricing). Per keyword, the ladder runs from $66.33 down to $23.96 a month — the clearest example in this category of a tool that gets cheaper per unit as you commit more. Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora, review sites and podcasts are all listed as sources.
- Determ — €99 a month for Focus (one topic, 1,000 mentions), €299 for Expand (five topics, 5,000 mentions) and €499 for Command (ten topics, 10,000 mentions), or €990, €2,990 and €4,990 a year respectively (determ.com/pricing). Unlimited users and real-time updates are included on every tier, which is unusual at this price point. On annual billing, Command lands at €499 per topic per year. Prices are in euros, so if you bill in dollars, add conversion and card fees to the arithmetic.
- BuzzSumo — priced by plan rather than by topic. Content Creation is $199 a month billed yearly and includes monitoring for 2,000 articles a month; PR & Comms is $299 a month with 10,000 articles a month plus journalist and influencer lists; Suite is $499 and Enterprise $999, annual billing only (buzzsumo.com/pricing). Pick it when the job is press, blog and newsletter coverage rather than social posts, because the social side is thinner than the listening specialists. What it includes is covered on our BuzzSumo tool page.
- YouScan — Starter 3 is $499 a month billed annually for three topics, up to 15,000 mentions a month, unlimited users, one messaging integration and ten AI assistant questions (youscan.io/pricing). That is $166.33 per topic per month, roughly seventeen times Awario’s rate. It earns the premium in exactly one situation: when your brand is discussed in images — logos, packaging, shelf shots — and text-only tools miss the conversation entirely. For everyone else it is an expensive way to read tweets.
Size the List Before You Size the Tool
Most teams pick a tool and then discover what it can watch. Do it the other way round: build the list first, price it second. Twenty minutes on the list saves a year of the wrong subscription.
- Step 1 — Write down the words customers use, not the words your team uses. Brand name, the two or three misspellings people actually type, product names, and the founder’s name if they post publicly. Internal codenames do not belong on the list.
- Step 2 — Add competitors, but only the ones you would change a campaign over. Three is usually enough. A ten-competitor list is a research project wearing a monitoring budget.
- Step 3 — Split the list into two columns: reply within a day, and read on Friday. Most entries belong in the second column, and that column does not need real-time refresh or unlimited logins.
- Step 4 — Count the first column. That number decides whether you need a $29 tier or a $499 one. The Friday column barely changes the price.
- Step 5 — Run the list through a trial before you pay for anything. Awario’s trial covers Starter, Brand24 runs 14 days, Determ runs five (extendable after a demo) and BuzzSumo trials every plan. Delete any term that only ever returns your own website.
- Step 6 — Name an owner per topic. A topic with no owner is a subscription nobody opens, and it gets cancelled at renewal for the wrong reason.
A Twelve-Topic List at Four Vendors (example)
The list below is an example: one B2B SaaS brand, four competitors, product-line terms and two executive names, twelve topics in total, priced on annual billing at published rates. The arithmetic is the point.
- Awario — Starter covers 3 of the 12 topics for $348 a year at $29 a month billed annually; the Pro tier at $89 a month annually is $1,068 a year and is the tier to price for a list this size. Either way that is 0.7% to 2.1% of Brandwatch’s median contract for the same job.
- Brand24 Pro — $4,788 a year for 12 keywords with unlimited users and hourly refresh. That is 9.6% of the median Brandwatch contract, and it is the tier to take when three or four people need to log in.
- Determ — €2,990 a year covers five of the twelve topics on Expand; €4,990 covers ten on Command. Twelve topics means dropping two or moving to a custom quote, and unlimited users plus real-time update come with every tier.
- YouScan — $5,988 a year buys three topics. Unless the brand lives in photographs, this is the line to delete from the budget.
- BuzzSumo PR & Comms — $3,588 a year for 10,000 monitored articles a month. It does not meter topics the way the others do, so the same spend covers all twelve terms — plus the journalist research that listening tools do not do at all.
Five Traps in Listening Pricing Pages
These traps cost real money, and none is a hidden fee in the deceptive sense: they are differences in how each vendor defines the thing you thought you were buying.
- Topics versus keywords. Brand24 prices keywords, YouScan prices topics, Determ gives unlimited keywords inside a topic. Identical coverage costs different amounts depending on which word the vendor chose for its meter.
- Mention caps. Brand24 Individual allows 2,000 mentions a month and Determ Focus 1,000. One mention spike — a single thread that gets picked up — can exhaust a month of cap. Ask what happens at the cap before you sign.
- Refresh intervals. Every 12 hours, hourly and real-time are different products, and the difference is buried a line under the price. Match the interval to the response you can actually deliver.
- Export gating. Awario restricts export to Pro and above. If a client report or a board deck is the deliverable, the cheapest tier may not include the thing you are selling.
- Monitoring sold as an add-on. Mention now routes trials and demos through Agorapulse and publishes no figures; Sprout Social lists Listening as an add-on to its Standard plan and up. If you already pay for a social suite, price the add-on before you price a new platform.
What We Would Choose, and When to Stay on Brandwatch
Fewer than five topics and one reader: Awario Starter at $29 a month billed annually is the cheapest credible answer in this category, and it is priced per alert rather than per seat. Seven to twenty-five topics with several people logging in: Brand24 Team or Pro. Real-time updates, unlimited users and a European data stack: Determ. Brands that live in photographs: YouScan, and only then. Press and journalist outreach rather than social mentions: BuzzSumo PR & Comms. If you already run a social suite, check what it bundles before adding a platform — our Hootsuite tool page and Sprout Social tool page cover what each already includes.
Stay on Brandwatch if you have a dedicated insights analyst, need visual and historical depth across several markets, or your buyer signs five-figure contracts without a second meeting. Also stay if your actual problem is not data. If nobody answered the last forty mentions, a cheaper tool produces the same unanswered inbox at a lower monthly cost. Fix the owner before you fix the subscription.
There is one more channel worth monitoring in 2026, and none of the tools above covers it well: what AI assistants say when someone asks about your category. Mention tracking catches what people post publicly. Our breakdown of AI visibility tools for small teams covers what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers say instead, which is where a growing share of first impressions now happens. If your monitoring budget is one line, split it by job rather than by tool, and keep the measurement framework behind both in our guide to data-driven marketing with AI analytics.
Whichever tool you pick, keep the list in a spreadsheet you own. Vendors rename tiers and retire plans; the twelve terms that matter to your brand survive all of it.
FAQ: Brandwatch Alternatives for Small Teams
How much does Brandwatch cost in 2026? — Brandwatch publishes no pricing; every suite is quote-based. Vendr’s contract data puts the median deal at $50,000 a year across 40 tracked purchases, ranging from $19,542 to $81,200, with an average 15% saving negotiated (vendr.com/marketplace/brandwatch). Budget for a sales cycle measured in weeks, not for a checkout page.
What is the cheapest credible alternative for a small team? — Awario Starter at $29 a month billed annually ($348 a year) covers 3 alerts and up to 30,000 mentions, with export moved up to Pro. Brand24’s cheapest tier is $199 a month billed annually for 3 keywords, so on an identical topic count Awario is roughly seven times cheaper — with visibly noisier relevance filtering and no visual listening.
Is Brand24 worth paying more for than Awario? — It depends on who logs in and how fast you must react. Brand24 Team at $299 a month billed annually gives 7 keywords, 10,000 mentions, unlimited users and hourly refresh; Awario’s Pro tier at $89 a month billed annually is the cheaper path when topic count and budget are the constraint. Both publish prices, both run trials, and both get cancelled by teams that never open them.
Can I start with free tools? — Google Alerts is free and catches a good share of web and news mentions; it does not cover most social platforms, it does not score sentiment, and it sends email rather than a dashboard with an owner. Use it to draft the list in Step 1, not to run a monitoring programme. Google Search Console is also free and is where the performance numbers we use to judge our own pages come from.
How is this different from AI visibility monitoring? — Social listening watches what people post and publish. AI visibility watches what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI answers say when someone asks about your category: a different data source and a different tool set. Most small teams need the second one sooner than they expect.
Key Takeaways
- 1Brandwatch publishes no prices; Vendr’s 40 tracked deals put the median contract at $50,000 a year.
- 2Judge listening tools on cost per tracked topic, not on the headline monthly price.
- 3Awario Starter is $29 a month billed annually for 3 alerts — about $9.67 per tracked topic.
- 4Brand24 gets cheaper per keyword as you climb: $66.33 at 3 keywords, $23.96 at 25.
- 5If nobody owns the alerts, no subscription size fixes the problem.
